January 2001January 27th, 2001 After playing last for the past several shows, this really didn't feel like a gig. We got in, played, and got out. No BS - no real waiting around for a sound check or what have you. I supposed it was because it was an acousitc show that things seemed easier. The only real gear we had was Jarrods drum kit. And even that was able to be delt with quickly and quietly. The Dream is small. It's a house that is trying to be a coffe shop. It's kinda working, but I'd have to see it with tables. The joint was nicely packed full of folks hanging out and generally just being there for the music. This isn't something we're used to - people actually LISTENING to whomever is performing, regardless who is friends with whom. I must make a point here - Ryan kinda really got his start in The Dream as a solo acoustic player. He'd do folkish covers of anything he liked and throw in his own orginal material as well. He's all about natural music and honest roots guitar. ... Which is why it shocked the shit outta me when he pulled out his acoustic pick up and effects pedals - and *plugged in* At an "unplugged" show. I gave him hell. If anyone needs a boost, a lift, some distortion - it's *me*! Ryans a fantastic technical player - so he has no fear when his sounds are laid bare by the steel ringing of the acoustic guitar. Me, on the other hand.... Everyone seemed to enjoy what we did - and if they didn't, they were polite about it. Hopefully we've gained a fan or tow from that eve. And I was back home before midnight this time - I was happy.
