March 2001March 10, 2001 Hoo - boy. Another night at The Volcano Room. This is nothing against the Volcano Room, but we just seem to have the crappiest of luck there. I don't know why! 4 bands this night and we were slated to go on second. To be honest, I can't really remember the opening and headlining bands names - the first one was "Superthai" or something similar. Dave liked them. Jarrod and Chessa and I had slipped out for Chinese food just down the strip mall. It's one of the pluses of the Volcano Room, it's right by a Krogers, McDonalds and a not bad Chinese joint. It was a pretty relaxed feeling before this show - never really looking at the clock and always kind of screwing around - which really is more of what being a in collaborative effort is about for me - those moments in between where you can at least bond with those around you and not worry about the show. While we were eating, we took note of the time and imagined Ryan running around frantic, trying to set up all of our gear as we were out late. We weren't too far from the truth ;) But we're able to make it back in time to set up and play perhaps one of the most technically troubled sets in our career. Ryans guitar cut out half way through Internal Velvet Pile - which I noticed mainly because I could actually hear the half assed solo I play during that tune. This left Ryan with playing the Ibanez - my back up guitar. Jarrod and I both thought the same thing - "Hope I don't break a string now" -- which I did. During MidWest Summer Punk Rock Death Knell. FIE! I recovered ok, I think, dropping down a few steps and quickly feeling out the new tuning of my guitar - sorta. Luckily the next song meant that Ryan was switching to his baritone and he gave me the Ibanez. Yet our last song, and Big Hit Single was up next and it required that Ryan play his normal six string. He diagnosed his problem as a faulty cable, and was back up to speed so that me might at least finish the set in some sort of dignity. The crowd? Well - at least all the bands showed up. Destination Earth has to be one of the coolest groups out there - so into their show and presentation - and solid good music that it seems wrong not to be entertained by them. Two thumbs up. The last band? I felt bad, since we're in such a position at one point - to be last *and* unknown. But they got paid something - gas money if anything. They were tight, well formulated crafty - but they sounded like every other happy high energy pop punk band. Yeesh.
