November 2000November 4, 2000 Everything that The Volcano Room wasn't - Festivilla was. For the most part. We arrived nice and early, to take in some of the other events, and if we didn't leave the house, Ryan would have us setting everything up and practicing until we bled. ;) So arriving two hours early for our slot was beneficial in many ways. The night was cool, but not horribly cold. We hung out outside and talked with Keith and Stephanie, the organizers of the event. It was their intent to mix up genre and art into one evening. Between folk acts there was industrial music being played. Beat poets drifted words across the ears of the attentive and we were caught up in it all. We had a nicely captive audience turn up as well. Everyone who said they would come out, did, which is always refreshing. About 6 or so folks form the IndyGoth list dropped in, a few SubGenii from Joliet and Kokomo, co workers and ex-girlfriends - they all came out. Even Chessas friend Dina came out. She was at the Volcano Room show - so seeing us twice in one week is a record of some sort. But what made it really nice was that we also had a few people who didn't know who we were sticking around to listen to our entire set. It's one thing to have friends listen to your music - it's another to have complete strangers do the same. Festivilla is slowly doing something about their sound situation. I don't know what it was like for everyone else, but our sound could have used some work. The Volcano Room was dead on perfect as it gets for us. Here I wasn't so sure. Vocals were quiet and my guitar often faded into the background. But everyone said were good. And that's just it - you can tell when people are being nice and saying "You did a good job" - but repeatedly everyone we knew came up to us and said "That was really damn good". It's refreshing to hear certainly. We were video taped by a friend of Daves. I'd be interested to see how the video comes out and what tale it tells. I know I made my share of mistakes - from misfingered chords to totally forgetting half of the intro to I Want Your Brain. Of course this an egocentric view point, but well - watchya gonna do? I'm the one who was most concerned with my performance:) Good gig - it was a good event. I hope Smedley has more events like this not only in turnout but also in variety of acts. |
